When my grandfather died in the mid 1950s, my mother wore black for at least a year. I also remember in 1963 there was a news item saying that Jackie Kennedy would mourn wearing white, something that was also done. I'm very impressed by Penelope Wilton's acting. She has Mrs. Crawley in that haunted, desperate grief spot on.
